Metro’s Formula for Change campaign heads to Downing Street

Having gained over 107,000 signatures, Metro and the family support charity Feed delivered their Formula for Change petition to the Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Wes Streeting today, to demand more is done to make infant formula accessible and affordable to all families.

Launched in 2023, our award-winning campaign has continued to raise awareness of the impact of soaring formula prices, which have rocketed by 25% in the past two years.

Under current guidelines, formula falls into the same category as tobacco and lottery items, and isn’t available to purchase with cash alternatives. However, without loyalty points and grocery vouchers provided by local councils and food banks to those struggling the most, parents at the sharpest end of the cost-of-living crisis have few options.

Some families are even being forced into unsafe infant feeding practices that put their babies’ health at risk, while others are formula foraging, or stealing formula to feed their children.

This is why the Formula for Change petition is urgently calling on the UK Government to review infant formula legislation and give retailers a clear green light to accept loyalty points, grocery vouchers provided by food banks and local authorities, and store gift cards as payment for infant formula.

While we know this measure alone won’t solve the problem, it will increase options for families.

The Westminster visit follows the Competition and Markets Authority’s recommendations that vouchers and loyalty points should be allowed when buying infant formula.Despite the CMA’s suggestion, the government has yet to comment on the issue.

When a petition exceeds 100,000, it is considered for debate in Parliament, and today’s milestone achievement saw key figures in the campaign’s success visit No.10 to hand-deliver the document.

Metro deputy editor Claie Wilson, journalist Kat Romero and founder of Feed Dr Erin Williams headed to No. 10 with Blackpool South MP Chris Webb and celebrity supporters LadBaby’s Mark Hoyle and wife Roxanne, who have been instrumental in the campaign by garnering support across their social media platforms and sharing their own experiences of food poverty.

Outside No. 10, Mark told Metro: ‘We’re hoping this is going to make such a huge difference to so many families in the UK.’

Roxanne added: ‘We wanted to be involved in the campaign because Mark and I meet parents who have cried at the checkout because they haven’t been able to use their vouchers to get formula.

‘It’s really important we’re not judging families. Every baby deserves to be fed.’

Metro’s Claie said: ‘I am so proud of the work we have done to raise awareness of the formula crisis in the UK and also so pleased to see so many others share their support and help make change.

‘Now we just need the government to do their bit. Last year, Wes Streeting promised to “get it done”, yet we’re still waiting, and families are still struggling. It is time to follow through on their pledge to help formula feeding parents.’

Kat said: ‘Over two years ago, I pitched a feature to Claie about a government policy that prohibited the discount of infant formula and how it was impacting families in a cost-of-living crisis.

‘Through that piece, I met Erin and the idea to launch this as a campaign was born. In the two years since, Formula For Change has achieved more than any of us involved could have imagined and today, we were invited to Downing Street to formally deliver our petition of over 100,000 signatures. Change is coming. What a day.’

Erin expressed how proud she was of how far the campaign has come in two years, but also admitted that there was still work to be done. Desperate parents have been reduced to watering down formula and even stealing tubs off shop shelves to ensure their babies get fed.

‘We’ve had great success in bringing down the prices of formula across the board, so families can still feed their children when money is tight,’ Erin told Metro.

‘We’re under no illusion that this will solve all the problems, but little actions can have big consequences.

‘We don’t need to change any laws or have big debates; change can be done without that, and it can be done quickly.’

Chris also joined the campaign team to deliver the petition, after recently raising the issue in the House of Commons and holding a drop-in event at Westminster to highlight the campaign to fellow MPs.

He said: ‘Today really puts into focus how much support this campaign has gathered across the UK, from normal working-class people to celebrities. It’s great to be able to hand that over to make sure their voices are all heard.’

Formula for Change 24/04/2025 Belinda Jiao jiao.bilin@gmail.com 07598931257
Chris wanted to support the campaign after seeing the problems first-hand (Picture: Metro/Belinda Jiao)

Speaking about his personal reason for wanting to be involved, Chris explained: ‘When I had my son last year, I went to baby groups. I saw mums struggling, asking for tubs of formula, and the same at food banks. There are babies that are going hungry. Families need help.

‘I looked for campaigns that were trying to provide this, and I found Formula for Change, so I reached out and have done what I can from my part.

‘We’re heading in the right direction and we won’t stop until formula is accessible to all.’

Further Formula For Change supporters came to Parliament Square to share the moment, including director Naomi Waring, whose short film about the formula crisis, Milk, was produced by Sienna Miller. Founders of baby banks The Space, Little Village and Abernecessities, and Change Box also attended.

Since its launch, there have been many wins for the Formula for Change campaign. Iceland was the first high street retailer to allow loyalty vouchers and gift cards to purchase baby formula. They also took the lead in providing clear labelling on baby formula to inform parents that all first infant formulas are nutritionally equivalent, regardless of brand or price.

Richard Walker, Executive Chairman of Iceland Foods said: ‘Formula for Change truly is a life-changing campaign for thousands of parents, and I’ve been so proud that we have supported its efforts as a business.

‘The work conducted by the team at Metro and Feed has been astonishing, and I fully support the petition they have delivered to No.10 today. It’s vital that the Government supports the CMA’s recommendations so we can make the formula affordable and accessible for all.’

Morrison’s has also gone on to allow other forms of payment for infant formula, while the Department of Health and Social Care officially confirmed that food and baby banks can supply cash-strapped families with formula tubs.

Since 2023, the campaign has received the backing of several MPs, including Monica Lennon, Preet Kaur Gill and celebrities Katherine Ryan, Ashley James and Michelle Heaton are among the famous faces who have voiced their support.

The campaign has also been given the prestigious Making a Difference award, which was voted for by the public, acknowledging Formula For Change’s drive for change.

President Donald Trump has pleaded ‘Vladimir stop’ after Putin launched an overnight attack on Ukraine killing at least 10.

Nato scrambled warplanes overnight after one of the dealiest attacks since the war began hit Kyiv.

At least 10 people were killed and more than 70 wounded in the missile attacks with apartment blocks and homes hit.

Six children and a pregnant woman were also rushed to hospital in the deadly assault.

Taking to Truth Social, the US president wrote: ‘I am not happy with the Russian strikes on KYIV. Not necessary, and very bad timing.

‘Vladimir, STOP! 5000 soldiers a week are dying. Lets get the Peace Deal DONE!’

KYIV, UKRAINE - APRIL 24: Rescue workers respond at the site of a Russian missile strike on apartment residential buildings in Svyatoshynskyi district on April 24, 2025 in Kyiv, Ukraine. In the early morning, Russia has launched a mass combined attack on the Ukrainian capital, and other cities of Ukraine. The strike on Kyiv resulted in the destruction of multi-story residential buildings, damage to administrative buildings, and non-residential buildings. At least ten people were killed and 63 were injured, including six children. Rescue workers continue to search for people under the rubble. Hours before the assault, Donald Trump accused Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky of prolonging the ‘killing field’ by refusing to hand Russia land.

Trump has told Zelensky he is ‘frustrated’ with the speed of peace talks, as the White House demanded Kyiv give up territory as part of a long-sought peace deal to end the three-year war.

Moscow has captured about 20% of Ukraine, including Crimea, which it seized in 2014. Some 4.6 million Ukrainians have fled their homes in the occupied territories and Crimea.

But Zelensky said ceding territory is out of the question, declaring: ‘There is nothing to talk about. It is our land, the land of the Ukrainian people.’

Appearing in the House of Commons this morning, Foreign Office minister Stephen Doughty described the assault as ‘absolutely horrific’ and a ‘stark reminder of the continued bloodshed and aggression perpetrated by Putin’ while Ukraine continues peace talks.

He added: ‘President Zelensky has shown his commitment to peace, President Putin must now agree to a full and immediate ceasefire without conditions as Ukraine has done.

‘We will not stop in our efforts to work with all the parties to that end.’

Bailiffs refuse to kick grieving disabled man out of council flat he was born in

Bailiffs refused to help evict a disabled man from the flat he was born in after the death of his mum.

Stephen Oakeshott, 54, has said he is being ordered out of his council home in after both his parents died in New Addington, Croydon.

The flat was in his mum Carol’s name, and was never passed on after she died unexpectedly two years ago.

But Croydon Council claimed they did not have the responsibility to house Stephen – who has mobility issues and learning difficulties – any more after his mum’s death.

He told Metro: ‘I am about to lose everything I have grown up with, it’s making me ill – I’m suffering fits and having panic attacks.

‘I am so scared, I don’t know what’s going to happen.’

Stephen’s mum Carol, whose name was on the tenancy, died in the flat two years ago after suffering a cardiac arrest.

Croydon Council ordered him out of the home, but when bailiffs turned up last Thursday, they told Stephen ‘they couldn’t put him through it’.

Stephen said: ‘I was so nervous before they came, but when they arrived they said they were shocked the council was doing this to me, and they wouldn’t be going through with it.’

He has since been told a social worker will now be rehousing him in the next two weeks, but Stephen is desperately trying to stay in his home.

The council claimed that because Stephen was also registered to another address in Tottenham, he had to vacate the flat.

But he explained that the flat was closed up years ago when he moved back in with his mum after four years of living apart.

Stephen said: ‘I tried to explain to them that the flat is not usable because it was all closed up with the support of my mental health team when I needed to move back in with my mum.

‘But they wouldn’t listen, and now I am still being kicked out.’

Croydon Council told Metro: ‘Whilst we understand that this is a difficult and upsetting situation for Mr. Oakeshott, we want to clarify that he was not a named tenant at his relative’s home, and there was no evidence that he was living there during the relevant period to be eligible to remain in the property.

‘Mr. Oakeshott’s case was brought to court on July 19, 2024, where the judge granted an outright possession order, meaning the court determined that Mr. Oakeshott was not entitled to remain in the property.

‘We are also aware that Mr. Oakeshott is registered as living at a property in a different London borough.

‘We have communicated the reasons for our decisions to Mr. Oakeshott and have done our best to support him through this process.’

Lidl has slashed the price of its best bakery items to just 29p
Fresh bakery items in Lidl grocery store in Ireland
Calling all Lidl bakery fans! (Picture: Getty Images)

If there’s one thing I know to be true about Lidl, it’s that the supermarket’s in-store bakery has a cult following.

Seriously, people are obsessed with everything from the retailer’s All Butter Croissant – with 122 of them selling every single minute – to the chocolate twists and the bread.

And there’s good news if you are part of the fan club, as it’s just been announced that Lidl is slicing its bakery prices, with some items now selling for just 29p each.

Customers will be able to purchase a Petit Pain or White Crusty Roll for 29p (previously 32p), while the beloved croissant will be going from 65p to 59p.

The croissant is one of the most popular bakery items (Picture: Lidl)

Other items included in the price drop are the All Butter Pain Au Chocolate, Pain Aux Raisin, Chocolate Twist, Chocolate Hazelnut Croissant, Almond Croissant, Maple and Pecan Plait and the Pastel de Nata.

All of these baked goods were originally 79p, but will have a new price of 69p.

A new Apple Turnover is also going to be just 69p when it launches in-store on April 25.

It’s not clear how long this roll back of prices will last for, so if you’re a pastry lover you might want to enjoy the savings while you can.

This comes after Lidl launched several new bakery items over Easter, including a Mini Egg Brownie, Cinnamon Bun Blondie, and a Brioche Chocolate Croissant.

And the retailer also recently unveiled plans for its first-ever in-store supermarket pub.

The £410,000 boozer will be located in a store in Dundonald, just outside Belfast, on the left side of the existing supermarket, at the opposite end of the store from the entrance.

According to drawings submitted to local planning officials, there will be six seats around the main bar, with 10 other tables/seating areas dotted around inside.

A lobby area, keg room, storage space with an ice machine, chill store, and office, with three toilets – a customer WC, an accessible unisex toilet and one for staff use only – are planned too.

The pub will also have an ‘off-sales’ area where customers can buy alcohol to consume off the premises, and an entrance/exit leading to the car park.

Pedro Pascal blasts ‘heinous loser’ JK Rowling after his powerful statement for trans community
Pedro Pascal has taken aim at JK Rowling over her response to the UK’s new ruling on transgender women (Picture: Getty)

Pedro Pascal has slammed JK Rowling, calling her a ‘heinous loser’ after she celebrated the UK’s Supreme Court ruling that trans women are not legally women.

Last week the UK’s highest court confirmed the terms ‘woman’ and ‘sex’ in the 2010 Equality Act ‘refer to a biological woman and biological sex’.

This now means that transgender women with a gender recognition certificate can be excluded from single-sex spaces, including toilets and changing rooms, if ‘proportionate’.

The decision has sparked mass protests both around the country and abroad, with celebrities such as Nicola Coughlan speaking out on the ‘horrifying’ ruling.

Soon after Harry Potter author Rowling shared a photo on social media aboard a superyacht celebrating the decision while smoking a cigar.

‘I love it when a plan comes together #SupremeCourt #WomensRights,’ she wrote.

In response, activist and writer Tariq Ra’ouf went on to call for a boycott of any future Harry Potter projects.

Posting a video on Instagram, he told his followers: ‘Don’t watch the show. Don’t go to Universal. Don’t buy a single Harry Potter thing ever. It’s time to tell these corporations that transphobia loses money.’

After watching the clip, The Last of Us star Pedro, 50, like it and share a defiant comment, writing: ‘Awful disgusting S*** is exactly right. Heinous LOSER behavior.’

This week Pedro, who has been a vocal supporter of trans rights for years, has made a powerful statement while attending the London premiere of a new Marvel film.

On Tuesday night, stars hit the red carpet to promote Thunderbolts, including Pedro, who is starring in the studio’s upcoming release The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

But when stepping out, the 50-year-old drew attention for wearing a white T-shirt that read ‘PROTECT THE DOLLS’.

The T-shirt is a part of a campaign by American designer Conner Ives, who designed the piece to call attention to the global anti-transgender sentiment that trans women are experiencing in several countries.

Dolls is an affectionate term coined by the LGBTQ+ community to refer to transgender women.

The move was praised by many.

‘Oh, Pedro with a shirt supporting trans women. Oh, how I love you,’ Rosa posted on X.

‘Pedro Pascal isn’t just showing up on screen—he’s showing up for people. Protect the Dolls isn’t fashion, it’s solidarity stitched into every thread,’ Safar shared.

‘Pedro Pascal wearing a “protect the dolls t-shirt” in the UK after last week’s ruling. What a man,’ Lori added.

It was @wethairjoel, however, who perhaps had the highest praise for the star, writing: ‘Pedro Pascal is attending an MCU premiere with a trans rights shirt on… he is a real-life superhero. He really is our Reed Richards.’

Pedro’s sister Lux Pascal, a model and actress who has recently appeared with her brother on several red carpets, came out as a transgender woman in February 2021.

At the time she said her family had been incredibly supportive of her transition, explaining that it was ‘something that’s very natural for everyone in my family’.

‘It’s almost something that they expected to happen,’ she added.

Speaking about her brother’s support, Lux said Pedro was ‘one of the first people to gift me the tools that started shaping my identity’.

When asked how Lux was finding the public reaction to her transition, Pedro told Esquire that while it wasn’t his place to ‘speak on her behalf’, she ‘is and has always been one of the most powerful people and personalities I’ve ever known’.

Earlier this year he shared a post on Instagram that read: ‘A world without trans people has never existed and never will.’

He went on to pin a comment that read: ‘I can’t think of anything more vile and small and pathetic than terrorizing the smallest, most vulnerable community of people who want nothing from you, except the right to exist.’

Proceeds from the Protect the Dolls T-Shirts are being donated to Trans Lifeline, a peer support and crisis hotline offering support to transgender people.

With real-time firing adjustment, the Central MD's self-propelled artillery regiment artillery crew struck the located target with several shots from a distance of about 20 kilometres. The drone camera recorded a direct hit and smoke. The activity of Ukrainian nationalists' aerial reconnaissance means were significantly reduced after the strike. The UK has banned the export of video game controllers to Russia to stop them being used to pilot killer drones in Ukraine.

New measures announced today by the Foreign Office focus on cutting off the Kremlin’s access to British tech as its military continues to batter civilians three years on from the invasion.

This morning, a Russian missile assault on Kyiv left at least ten people dead in one of the worst attacks on the Ukrainian capital since the war began.

Foreign Office minister Stephen Doughty told MPs: ‘Today, we have announced new sanctions, including the shocking repurposing of gaming console controllers to kill Ukrainians by Russian.

A social media post from the Foreign Office said controllers made for video game consoles are being used by the Russian army to direct their drones on the front line.

Separate measures would ‘cut Russia’s war machine off from innovative British tech, world-leading software, and close loopholes exploited by Putin’s cronies’, the post said.

The move comes a day after the Kremlin announced sanctions on 15 British MPs and six members of the House of Lords, banning them from entering Russia.

They included long-serving Liberal Democrat MP Alistair Carmichael and new Labour MP Johanna Baxter, who has campaigned for the return of Ukrainian children who have been taken from their homes.

Baxter said: ‘The abduction of Ukrainian children by Russia is one of the most heart-wrenching and indefensible crimes of this war, which the world cannot ignore.

‘And sanctioning me, as they just have done, the Russian Government will not silence me.’

Lib Dem defence spokesperson Helen Morgan, who was also banned from Russia, said she would ‘wear this retaliatory sanction as a badge of honour’.

In the House of Commons this morning, Shadow Foreign Secretary Dame Priti Patel said the sanctions showed the parliamentarians are ‘on the right side of history’.

The European Union also banned the export of video game accessories to Russia earlier this year.

US President Donald Trump has claimed a deal to end the war in Ukraine is ‘very close’, but attacked Zelensky in a post on his website Truth Social yesterday.

He said the Ukrainian leader’s comment that he would not recognise the occupation of Crimea ‘will do nothing but prolong the “killing field”’, adding: ‘He has nothing to boast about!’

In the House of Commons this morning, Doughty said: ‘The UK’s position regarding Ukrainian sovereignty is well known, and our position has not changed.

‘We do not recognise Russian sovereignty over any territory, including Crimea, and when, how, and on what terms this war comes to an end can only be decided by negotiations with Ukraine.’

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and top negotiator Steve Witkoff abruptly pulled out of Ukraine talks in London on Monday shortly before they were due to take place.

Nationwide shares major update on £100 customer bonus payout date

If you bank with Nationwide, you could be due a windfall in the next few months — a welcome prospect for those in need of a cash boost.

The building society operates as a mutual rather than a traditional bank, meaning it’s owned by and run for the benefit of its members.

As such, Nationwide shares profits among account holders (rather than shareholders) as part of its Fairer Share Payment initiative, with almost 4 million customers nabbing a £100 bonus last summer.

‘The Fairer Share Payment is our way of rewarding those members who choose us for their everyday banking as well as having savings or a mortgage with us,’ the bank said in a statement.

The exact details of Nationwide’s next one-off payout have yet to be revealed, but recently announcement offers a major update on the timeline.

And ahead of the Board’s official decision, last year’s eligibility criteria gives us an idea of what to expect this time around.

When will the Nationwide bonus be paid out?

The bank’s financial results are due to be shared with the public on Thursday May 29, along with an announcement on the Fairer Share Payment.

A Nationwide spokesperson tells Metro: ‘Nationwide’s Board will decide on a Fairer Share payment for 2025 and it will depend on our financial performance.

‘That assessment will be made after our financial year end, with the eligibility criteria for this year being agreed then too. The decision will be announced as part of our full year results in May.’

Last year, bonuses were deposited into members’ accounts between June 13 and June 28, so if the scheme does go ahead – which Martin Lewis’s Money Saving Expert said is a ‘likely’ outcome – you’ll probably have a few months to wait before you receive any cash.

However, all the hard work was done for customers in previous payouts, so you shouldn’t need to make a claim or request the money yourself.

If it’s confirmed and you think you qualify but haven’t heard anything from Nationwide by June, get in touch. And don’t forget to stay aware of fraudulent attempts at obtaining your personal information to apply for the payment.

Who is eligible for the Nationwide bonus?

Assuming the scheme comes with the same prerequisites as it did for 2023-2024, to be in the running, customers must hold both a qualifying current account as well as a qualifying savings or mortgage account.

Each of the bank’s current accounts were eligible, providing certain criteria are met.

The first of these is that the account was open on March 31, the end of the financial year — although those who switched accounts between January 1 and March 31 were exempt from any additional requirements.

Otherwise, Nationwide explained that FlexAccount, FlexDirect or FlexBasic holders must have either received £500, made two payments from their account, or completed at least 10 payments out of the account between January and March to qualify.

Meanwhile, FlexPlus account holders must have paid their monthly fee, and FlexOne, FlexStudent or FlexGraduate customers need to have made at least one payment in or out during March.

Those with investment accounts and stocks and shares weren’t included in the criteria, but savings account holders qualified if they had a minimum of £100 in total across Nationwide personal savings accounts or cash ISAs at the end of any day in March.

When it came to mortgages, customers must have owed at least £100 on their residential mortgage with the building society on March 31.

Home loans through subsidiaries such as The Mortgage Works, UCB Home Loans Corporation Limited, or Derbyshire Home Loans Limited are excluded from the bonus, as are commercial mortgages and those not completed by March 31.

If you’re not sure whether you fit the bill, you can use Nationwide’s eligibility checker to work it out (although be aware this criteria may change for 2025).

Nato has scrambled warplanes overnight after Russia launched one of its deadliest attacks on Ukraine’s capital since the war began.

At least ten people were killed and more than 70 wounded in the missile attacks on capital city Kyiv, with apartment blocks and homes hit.

Six children and a pregnant woman were also rushed to hospital in the deadly assault.

Putin’s armed forces also hit Kharkiv, Poltava region, Pavlohrad, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia and Zhytomyr.

The Polish operational command announced it had scrambled its own and NATO aircraft due to the intensity of the Putin bombardment in Ukraine.

‘Due to the activity of long-range aviation of the Russian Federation, which is carrying out strikes on targets located, among others, in western Ukraine, the operation of Polish and allied aircraft has commenced in Polish airspace,’ said a statement.

The commander ‘activated all available forces and resources at his disposal’.

His comment came after American media reports said the Trump administration was ready to accept recognition of annexed land in Crimea.

In a post on his Truth Social network, Trump accused the Ukrainian leader of ‘inflammatory’ comments that he claimed would drag the war out.

‘If he wants Crimea, why didn’t they fight for it eleven years ago when it was handed over to Russia without a shot being fired?’ Trump wrote in the 260-word-long rant.

‘The statement made by Zelensky today will do nothing but prolong the “killing field,” and nobody wants that!’

He added: ‘It’s inflammatory statements like Zelenskyy’s that makes it so difficult to settle this War.’

The Ukrainian leader said accepting Crimea, which had been recognised as part of an independent Ukraine for 23 years before the annexation, as Russian territory would ‘violate’ Ukraine’s constitution.

Vice President JD Vance called on Ukraine to accept the American peace deal today, one that closely aligns with Putin’s wants.

Putin has long said that he would sign a peace agreement in which Ukraine withdraws troops from the four provinces he abruptly annexed in 2022.

The deal says that Ukraine and Russia would ‘freeze’ territorial lines, leaving Russian forces deep inside occupied eastern Ukraine. It would also stop Ukraine from joining NATO.

‘We’ve issued a very explicit proposal to both the Russians and the Ukrainians, and it’s time for them to either say yes or for the United States to walk away from this process,’ US Vice President JD Vance told reporters in India yesterday.

Top diplomats from the UK, US, France, Germany and Ukraine have suddenly pulled out of peace talks in London.

Senior officials from the five countries will meet instead for high-level talks on how to end Russia’s war.

This downgrading in diplomacy comes despite pressure from President Donald Trump pushing for Kyiv and Moscow to agree to a ceasefire.

The talks in London today would see a US peace proposal discussed, which would recognise Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea.

But this recognition was rejected by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Ukraine’s allies are hoping to receive security guarantees and reconstruction projections.

The Financial Times claimed that Vladimir Putin has also offered to halt his invasion along the current front lines.

This would leave about 20 percent of Ukraine in Russia’s hands.

It comes as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Trump may walk away from Ukraine peace efforts in a matter of days if he can’t end the war.

He said: ‘We need to determine very quickly now, and I’m talking about a matter of days, whether or not this is doable.

‘If it’s not possible, if we’re so far apart that this is not going to happen then I think the president is probably at a point where he’s going to say we’re done.

‘It’s not our war. We didn’t start it. The United States has been helping Ukraine for the past three years and we want it to end, but it’s not our war.

‘President (Trump) has spent 87 days at the highest level of this government repeatedly taking efforts to bring this war to and end.

‘We are now reaching a point when we need to decide and determine whether this is even possible or not. Which is why we’re engaging both sides.’

The UK government meanwhile said it was ‘absolutely committed’ to securing a ‘just and lasting peace in Ukraine’” Downing Street has said, ‘ after Rubio pulled out of the talks.

Asked if Sir Keir Starmer was disappointed at the decision, the Prime Minister’s official spokesman said: ‘Today there will be substantive technical meetings with European, US and Ukrainian officials on how to stop the fighting and end Putin’s illegal invasion.’

The spokesman said that Foreign Secretary David Lammy had ‘a productive call with Rubio yesterday, who confirmed that the US was looking forward to substantive and positive technical meetings in London today’.

‘As you know, we remain absolutely committed to securing a just and lasting peace in Ukraine and these talks today are an important part of that,’ he said.

Florida man offers police booze during car chase: 'Don’t know if he was expecting us to just say ‘cheers''

Don’t drink and drive.

A Florida man casually offered pursuing deputies a vodka spritzer in the middle of a car chase after he allegedly stole several items from a convenience store, authorities said.

Deputies with the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Spring Lake Market on Saturday after Richard Christopher Smith, 39, allegedly took items from a market, including several alcoholic beverages, and walked out.

FLORIDA WOMAN POSES AS ICE AGENT TO KIDNAP WIFE OF EX-BOYFRIEND FROM WORK, AUTHORITIES SAY

When the deputies arrived, Smith fled in a vehicle, prompting a pursuit, the sheriff’s office said.

“It was during this pursuit when Smith held a can of Ketel One vodka spritz out the window as he drove by a deputy trying to get him to stop, telling the deputy ‘I was just going to give you a drink, that’s it’ as he passed,” the sheriff’s office said. “We don’t know if he was expecting us to just say ‘Cheers!’ and let him go, or what.”

The chase ended a few minutes later in the parking lot of a business at the Sebring Regional Airport.

INVESTIGATORS REVEAL NEW DETAILS ON FSU SHOOTING

After his toast, Smith, who is a Miami resident, tried to ram two patrol vehicles as all four of his tires were flattened by spike strips, police said.

He was unfazed as he calmly tried to walk away from the scene – which was surrounded by deputies – while puffing on a cigarette, authorities said.

“You guys had fun, though, right?” he asked them.

He was eventually Tased in the middle of his smoke break and arrested.

Smith is charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, battery on a law enforcement officer, two counts of resisting arrest, DUI, refusal to submit to a DUI test and petit theft.

His bond was set at $120,000.
